Contracts Counsel — Technology Transactions in Singapore: the complete guide

Everything below is written for this specific listing — the market it sits in, what the week really looks like, how the pay band works, how to prepare, and where the role leads afterwards.

Why this Contracts Counsel — Technology Transactions role exists

Cedar Legal Partners is a Legal & Compliance company of 220 lawyers people, founded in 2008 and headquartered in Singapore. Cedar advises tech companies, banks and asset managers on cross-border contracts, licensing and regulatory work across APAC. About a third of its lawyers are qualified in more than one jurisdiction, and the firm runs a formal secondment programme with client legal teams. For this particular opening, the work is done from Singapore — full-time, hybrid — and reports into the legal & compliance side of the business.

The useful question is not what the contracts counsel — technology transactions title means in general, but what Cedar Legal Partners needs it to mean this year. The emphasis on 7+ years post-qualification in tech / commercial contracts and on draft and negotiate saas, data processing and reseller agreements is the answer. At senior level you will set direction inside your area, mentor others, and be judged as much on the decisions you prevent as the work you produce.

Employers in legal & compliance are hiring for depth over breadth, and Singapore is one of the markets where that demand is concentrated. Singapore sits inside that picture: Singapore is a regional headquarters hub, so many roles carry APAC-wide scope. That makes it an unusually strong career accelerator for mid-level managers.

A week as a Contracts Counsel — Technology Transactions at Cedar Legal Partners

This is a hybrid role based in Singapore. In practice that usually means two to three anchor days on site for planning, reviews and the conversations that are faster in person, with focused work done wherever you are most effective.

In practice the calendar of a contracts counsel — technology transactions here splits between the work itself, the conversations that unblock it, and maintenance of what already exists. The third slice is the one candidates underestimate at interview, and it is where a senior-level hire either earns trust in Singapore or does not.

Expect a listening period of roughly six weeks, then ownership of a meaningful problem. By month nine your judgement should be load-bearing for the team. Ask the hiring manager what "good" looks like at six months for this contracts counsel — technology transactions — a team that cannot answer that has not thought the role through.

Where the hours go in this Contracts Counsel — Technology Transactions role

  • Core delivery — draft and negotiate saas, data processing and reseller agreements
  • Applied 7+ years post-qualification in tech / commercial contracts work and problem-solving alongside the wider team
  • Review, handover and coordination with the people who depend on this role
  • Maintenance, fixes and improving what already exists
  • Planning, documentation and keeping current in legal & compliance

What S$160,000 – S$210,000 really means here

The advertised range is S$160,000 – S$210,000, a spread of roughly 31% between floor and ceiling, with a midpoint near SGD 185,000. In most structured pay systems the midpoint represents someone fully performing the role, the floor someone growing into it, and the ceiling a candidate who arrives with directly transferable, hard-to-hire experience — in this case, depth in 7+ years post-qualification in tech / commercial contracts.

Singapore averages S$86,000 across advertised roles. For a senior-level contracts counsel — technology transactions in legal & compliance, the relevant comparison is narrower: two or three live listings in Singapore for the same work. Pull them before any salary conversation so you are arguing from data, not from hope.

Negotiate against the band, not against Cedar Legal Partners. "What would someone at the top of this band be doing that I am not yet doing?" is a stronger opening than a number, and for a contracts counsel — technology transactions post it often produces a written development plan alongside the offer.

Beyond base pay, always confirm

  • Bonus or commission structure, and whether it is discretionary or formulaic
  • Pension or retirement contribution and the employer match under Singapore rules
  • Health cover, including dependants
  • Paid leave, public holidays and any carry-over policy
  • Equity, if offered — the vesting schedule matters more than the headline value
  • Commuting, parking or transit costs in Singapore

Who gets hired as a Contracts Counsel — Technology Transactions

Assume every other shortlisted candidate matches the 7+ years post-qualification in tech / commercial contracts requirement too. Your advantage has to be a piece of work you stopped, deferred or simplified, and what it saved — specific, dated and checkable.

Candidates who cannot explain why this employer, specifically, get screened out early. Tie every claim to something that happened, with a date, a number or a named outcome.

One tailored application to this contracts counsel — technology transactions post beats twenty generic ones. Mirror the language of the responsibilities section, reference Cedar Legal Partners by what it actually does, and cut anything that could have been sent to another employer unchanged.

Preparing for the Cedar Legal Partners interviews

Build a small bank of stories before the first call: one about 7+ years post-qualification in tech / commercial contracts under pressure, one about a disagreement you handled well, one about something you got wrong. Almost every question in a contracts counsel — technology transactions process is a variation on those three.

Research Cedar Legal Partners specifically. Rigorous but not chaotic — matter budgets are set in writing and utilisation targets are moderate for the sector. Juniors get supervised drafting from month one instead of pure research work. Then connect it to Singapore — what the local team is likely dealing with day to day matters more than the corporate description.

Questions worth preparing for

  • Why this Contracts Counsel — Technology Transactions role at Cedar Legal Partners, and why now?
  • Walk me through your experience with 7+ years post-qualification in tech / commercial contracts.
  • Tell me about a time draft and negotiate saas, data processing and reseller agreements went wrong. What did you change?
  • Tell me about a decision you got wrong and what you do differently now.
  • How do you prioritise when everything is urgent?
  • What would your first ninety days in Singapore look like?

Relocating to Singapore

If you are moving to Singapore for this contracts counsel — technology transactions position, treat relocation as a project with its own timeline. Visa processing, housing, schooling and banking all run in parallel, and the one that slips is usually the one you started last.

The Employment Pass requires a qualifying salary that rises with age and sector, plus COMPASS points scoring. The ONE Pass targets very high earners and top-tier talent.

For this specific listing: Employment Pass sponsored, plus qualification transfer support and relocation allowance of up to S$18,000 for the candidate and family.

Ask which days are fixed, whether they are team-wide or personal choice, and how far the office is from the neighbourhoods you would realistically live in. A commute you can do twice a week is a very different decision from one you would do five times. Get the answers in writing before you resign from your current role — especially anything specific to Singapore.

Where a Contracts Counsel — Technology Transactions role leads next

A senior-level contracts counsel — technology transactions in legal & compliance typically has two credible paths after two to four years: deeper specialisation, where 7+ years post-qualification in tech / commercial contracts becomes the thing the organisation relies on you for, or breadth, where you take on scope across more people and more surface area.

The path also depends on the company stage. In a 220 lawyers-person legal & compliance business, breadth usually arrives faster than a formal title does — which suits some people and frustrates others.

Cedar Legal Partners operates in Singapore, Hong Kong, Mumbai, which matters for a contracts counsel — technology transactions if internal mobility or a future move out of Singapore is part of your plan. Multi-site employers also give you a second internal market when the legal & compliance job market outside slows down.
